Meteor boys, p 127. NF.14 pilots would fly at speeds higher than this. Especially finals
P 137 procedure to avoid phantom dive in long bodied meteors (such as the Nf11) was to feel with your left hand for the 3 levers = full flaps, gear down, brakes-in
A safety trick in the Meteor ws when turning onto the final approach, you put your left hand forward in an open position and checked that you could feel three levers. Touching three meant you had la ding gear down, full flap and importantly, speed brakes in.
‘Moose’ Davies in The Meteor Boys p137
Eventually they would teach brakes in, gear down.
In a tight break onto the downwind leg the airbrakes would already be out, the throttles closed and there would be nearly 90 degrees of bank applied as you banged the gear down.
